May Walk

,
In the cool of the morning I took a walk;
For spring’s fresh air and to God talk.
Both puppy and dog accompanied me,
Running in the grass, happy and free.

I, however, walked the road,
By trees fresh leaves o’ershadowed.
The crisp air had a touch of a chill;
Cold, I continued the same path still.

While admiring the field on my right,
Lush green grass in the warm sunlight.
It took me a minute to understand
I could choose to overland.

I changed my course to the meadow lush,
Comforted by warm sunshine’s touch.
I realized that my soul does the same,
Choosing in shadows to remain.

When I could bask in Father’s light,
In pastures green with pure delight.
Why do I walk with longing lope?
For warmth of sunshine, merely hope?

Invited by Jesus to His side,
I needn’t in dimness hide my stride.
Where my enemies wait and lurk,
Darkly doing the devil’s work.

Father, let me keep my pace
In your light and in your grace!
Until my walk on earth is done,
Victory in Jesus, my race won.
